Tools for Macintosh OS X users

These are the tools you should have on your Macintosh OS X computer to cover all the bases when downloading, unpacking/joining, playing, converting, or dealing with subtitles. All programs are free unless otherwise noted.

Downloading:
Mostly you can just download files using your web browser, but if you'd like to use a download manager (and there are good reasons to do so), use JDownloader. It's a pain in the ass to find a reasonable place to download the program (avoid using the homepage: jdownloader.org) but as of May, 2009 here is a direct link from softpedia:

There may be Firefox extensions or other download manager tools available, but generally Mac users don't have the options available to Windows users.

Unpacking/Joining the files you download:
Mac OS X has limited support built-in for many common compression formats but you will need other programs to deal with .001 files (HjSplit) and password protected .rar files. These free tools will cover 99.99% of your needs:

The UnArchiver can unpack almost every compressed file format. It can only unpack files with .rar extension that ARE NOT password protected. Use this as your default program to unpack most files. If you put all the .rar files you download into the same folder, double clicking the first one will start the process. If it stops and tells you that you need a password or any other error, click cancel (because it will not work) and move on to your next tool.

UnRarX is needed for files with .rar extension that ARE password protected. The best way to use this tool is to launch it first (by double-clicking it's icon), a window will open where you can click a button to put in a password and then you drag the first of the .rar files into the UnRarX window.

AJoiner is used for files with .001, .002, etc extension (HjSplit). The best way to use this tool is to right-click on the file with extension .001 and choose AJoiner from the "Open With" submenu that pops up when you right-click on the file.

Unfortunately, you cannot set AJoiner as your default application to open HjSplit files because Mac OS does not distinguish them from other RAR files. It cannot unpack files with .rar extension so do not set it as the default application for RAR files.

When the AJoiner application opens, sometimes it will NOT proceed right away and tell you there is an error. Click "Join" anyway. The errors are almost never anything to worry about. It might say it expected one size for a file and it thinks it doesn't match what is actually there, but they almost ALWAYS are the same. So click "Join."
MacHacha is an alternative for joining files with .001 extensions.

Ez7z is a program for the extremely rare bunch of files that have a .7z file extension.

Playing the movie files:

VLC, of course.

The best thing about this program is that it comes with built-in codecs for playing almost every kind of movie file known to humans ... including, with the latest version, Real Media bullshit. If you use this program you can play anything. If it won't play it, nothing else probably will.

The second best thing about VLC is that, since it is very customizable with keyboard shortcuts, you can do things like drift the subtitles and/or audio track forward or backward by milliseconds if either one of them is slightly out of sync.

It also has the best overall subtitle support.

The other Player you should have on your system is MPlayer.

Like VLC it's open-source, but it's hosted by freetard snobs so it seems and sometimes is more complicated to use and to acquire the right version for your needs and the associated 'libraries' it also needs (more about this in the "Working with Subtitles" section, below). It has more mature Real Media support than VLC, but what it really does better than VLC is seeking and scanning. VLC kinda skids along, hoping for a keyframe, while MPlayer jumps instantaneously from point to point.
The downside to MPlayer is that there is not much of an interface and very little in terms of setting preferences for it. Here are a few sources for learning the Keyboard Commands for use with MPlayer:

You might also consider trying, or at least keeping an eye on MPlayer Extended:

You should also install Perian (The Swiss Army Knife for QuickTime):

You don't really need Flip4Mac (for playing Windows Media bullshit) because VLC plays them, but you can download it from Apple

Editing and Converting movie files:

It's a shame Apple charges $25.00 for QuickTime Pro, which you need for editing files, but it's a decent editor if you do pay, and then it will also export and convert to almost any format or destination you might need.

Free tools you should have that will do all you need:

ffmpegx (for converting/exporting, joining)
MPEG Streamclip (for editing and exporting/converting)
Handbrake (for ripping and exporting/converting)

D-Vision, although no longer in development, still runs fine on OS X Leopard, and has a nice tool for easy joining of .avi files ... or use ffmpegx.

VisualHub used to be many people's paid program of choice for exporting and converting, but it has sadly been discontinued. The developer no longer offers it for download but is working on something new, so keep an eye on the web site for news.

One area the Mac is sadly lacking in is support for editing .mkv files. Playback is no problem, as VLC, MPlayer and QuickTime (with Perian installed) will all play them. Here are some resources to keep an eye on:

Working with Subtitles:

First of all, if you get subtitles included with the movie, they usually just work. Here are some things to look out for if you are having trouble:

Make sure the movie file and the subtitle file(s) have the exact same name. Best way to do that is to copy one name and paste it into the name for the other.
Make sure the movie file and the subtitle file(s) are in the same folder.
Eliminate any "foreign" characters such as ü, ø, å, etc from file names. Just change them to u, o, a, etc.

External subtitles usually come in one of two flavors: a single (per movie file) .srt file (which will be in only one language) or a matching pair of .idx and .sub files (which can contain multiple languages). VLC will play both kinds but the .srt files look a lot better than the idx/sub pair. If you use VLC and all you have is a idx/sub pair, choose your desired language at the bottom of the "Video" Menu (while the movie is playing). QuickTime doesn't like the idx/sub pair very much, and while MPlayer supports the idx/sub pair, it's often impossible to know how to choose your desired language because of its freetard lack of good documentation and freetard interface.

There are no known free tools for editing an idx/sub pair or converting them to a .srt file that we know of at this time, and it's not something we recommend you pay for. Look for .srt files to match your movie here:

If you need to edit, shift time, or re-sync the subtitles in srt format:

Jubler
It will do almost everything you need to do to a subtitle: shift time, spell-check, re-sync, etc. It's being actively developed and the developer is pretty quick, although sometimes short, with answers in his forum. Definitely see this post regarding MPlayer.

How to Convert Videos for iPod (Mac OS X)

It's a shame Apple charges $25.00 for QuickTime Pro, which you need for editing movie files, but it's a decent editor if you do pay, and then it will also export and convert to almost any format or destination you need. This might change with the new "Snow Leopard" operating system due from Apple sometime in 2009, and it will be free.

The BIG advantage of using QuickTIme is that it will burn subtitles onto the movie if you need them. There are free programs with iPod presets for converting video files but support for subtitles is either absent or difficult, sometimes requiring a second conversion; one to burn the subtitle onto the movie and then a second to convert it to iPod.

ffmpegx (for converting/exporting, joining)
MPEG Streamclip (for editing and exporting/converting)
Handbrake (for ripping and exporting/converting)

There is another program that is free and probably the easiest to use but it has been discontinued by its developer:

iSquint

Download from softpedia

It depends on the size of the file, but usually iSquint takes forever to convert files and it doesn't accurately show the progress BUT it works and it's FREE :)

Step 1:
Open iSquint and drag your video file into the "Drag files below" space.

Step 2:
I would recommend checking the "H.264 Encoding" box because it makes the converted file take up less space, but you don't have to. You can also adjust the Quality to whatever you want. Keep in ming that the higher the quality, the more space the file takes up. Usually Standard quality is fine. Then click Start. Your file should save on your desktop unless you click Change and change the location.

Remember that iSquint takes a while to convert. Usually, if the file is big, I just start it before I go to bed and let it run all night.

How to View/Edit Subtitles (Mac OS X)

First of all, if you download the movie file and subtitle file together they should just work. If you have any problems, start by meeting these recommendations:

The movie file and the subtitle file(s) have the exact same name.
The movie file and the subtitle file(s) are in the same folder.
There are no "foreign" characters such as ü, ø, å, etc in file names.

For example:

Basic Love (Oi ching ku see) [2009] • Hong Kong.avi
Basic Love (Oi ching ku see) [2009] • Hong Kong.srt

Barren Illusions (Oinaru gen'ei) [1999] • Japan.avi
Barren Illusions (Oinaru gen'ei) [1999] • Japan.idx

If you name your files properly maybe you have the problem of the language of the subtitle. This will only be possible if you have two subtitles files like in our example above: an .idx/.sub pair (VobsSub). If you have a single .srt file and it's the wrong language, you have the wrong subtitle. there is no changing it.

With the .idx/.sub pair (VobSub), it is a function of the application you use to watch the movie to choose the desired language.

Three applications for playing movies with soft subs on Mac OS X and how they deal with Vobsub :

QuickTime will recognize that they are there but will seldom display them on your movie.
MPlayer will recognize them and try to guess the language you want based on your computer's system language. If it guesses wrong, it is not always possible to change it.
VLC is the program of choice if you have problems with the other two. It will recognize and display all languages present in the files AND let you easily choose between them:

As you can see, the subtitles don't look very good. That is another downside to using VobSub format subtitles. They are actually images that can't be edited or made any prettier on a Mac. So look for text format subs at one of these sites:

Most any text file format will work - SubRip (.srt), MicroDVD (.sub), Subviewer (.sub), SSA1-5 (.ssa) , SAMI (.smi) and VPlayer (.txt), SubRip being the most common and they look good in all programs.

Sometimes subtitles you download separately from a movie will not be in sync. If the subtitles are simply a few seconds early or late, consistently, you can correct that problem on the fly while watching the movie with VLC by using the the "H" and "J" keys on your keyboard. "H" will move the subtitles backward in time in 50 millisecond increments, and "J" will move them forward in time.
MPlayer uses the "Z" and "X" keys to accomplish the same thing.

If the subtitles seem to drift more and more out of sync over time (maybe because the framerate of the SubRip is different than the frame rate of your movie) or if you'd like to permanently fix subtitle delay you can use:

Jubler will do almost everything you need to do to a text format subtitle (it does NOT work with VobSub): shift time, spell-check, re-sync, etc. It's being actively developed and the developer is pretty quick, although sometimes short, with answers in his forum and the help file is helpful. It requires MPlayer to play the video, and there are some issues with which version of MPlayer works best so read this post regarding MPlayer.

How to Hardsub Your Videos (AutoGK)

The following is a step-by-step guide on how to embed softsubs (.srt) into your video files:

Step 1: Go to "Input File" and locate your video file.

Step 2: Press "Crtl" + "F8" to bring up the "External Subs" option and locate your subtitles.

Step 3: If there are multiple audio tracks, select the one you want. If there is only ONE audio file, it will be automatically selected.

Step 4: Select your desired output size (Predetermined Size / Custom Size / Target Quality). Note that selecting a Custom Size video may take twice the duration of Predetermined Size.

Step 5: "Advanced Setting" will provide you with various options for your video format/width, etc. Try to match the audio codec with with your original file to avoid your final product from getting out of sync audio. If you are using an external .srt file, you do not need to check the subtitles option.

Step 6: Once everything is ready, just click "Add Job" and "Start".

Plus Factors:

AutoGK is a freeware.

It is by far one of the easiest way to hardsub your videos, and best for those with limited video know-how.

You do not need to convert your .srt files into .ssa prior to embedding them to the videos (unlike most other video encoding softwares).

Minus Factors:

Videos hardsubbed by AutoGK may be out-of-sync at times.

Therefore it is best to open your video files VirtualDub and ensure that you DO NOT get an error message from VirtualdDub regarding the audio compression of your original video file.

If you get the error message, you should give up on your intention to hardsub this particular video OR learn how to uncompress your audio file (will be discussed in next tutorial).

Note. DivXLand Media Subtitler requires Windows Media Player, because it integrates the Windows Media Player component for maximum playback compatibility and performance.

Select subtitle line. In the text box, edit as required. In manual mode, input time to show subtitle and duration.
Right clicking on the line opens the editing box where subtitle font can be; bold, italic and underlined as needed. Subtitle line can also be removed.
To insert additional lines: Select the line, click "Edit" then "Add caption" and choose where to place the line.
In Press and hold mode: Select the subtitle line you want to add timings to. Play video and click the apply button to start the subtitle. Let go of the apply button to stop the duration.

If the subtitles appear early or late, you can offset the delay. Click "Edit"; select "Set delay" and use the slider bar. Left will make the subtitles appear earlier and right will make them appear later.

Note. This can not be used to adjust timings for subtitles made for a different video frame rate. You could use SubResync (a utility of VobSub) to attempt to correct that problem. Of course you'll need to identify the video frame-rate. GSpot is a good free utility for this.

How to Play RM Files (Mac OS X)

The latest version of VLC supports playback of Real Media files with or without soft subs.

MPlayer also supports Real Media playback with subtitles. It requires installation of a codec pack you can get at the MPlayer web site. Make sure you choose the correct package for either Intel (x86) or PPC.

You could use RealPlayer but it's a big dumb program for a dumb little format, and subtitle support is iffy. Don't bother. If you have VLC or MPlayer, it just works.

We've had quite a few questions regarding media players for Mac OS.
Most recently; How to play rmvb files.

The simple option is to use RealPlayer, and supposedly with the a plugin it can play subtitles. I used RealPlayer around the time it first came out and I hated it. It's potentially possible that they're fixed all the things I hated about the program, but I tend to hold grudges. Only thing I hated more was AOL.

Something that rates #2 in PC World Magazine's list of 25 worst products of all time in 2006 (hmmm. AOL made #1) and #5 of 20 most annoying tech product in 2007. Does not inspire much confidence in me.

Read further criticisms and and problem here.

The next method is to convert the .rm/.rmvb files. This tutorial will explain how to accomplish this.

I did some looking around and I think I may have found a player solution that fits the bill.

MPlayer

Information on Wikipedia states:

It's a cross platform media player that can be used on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, BSD Unix, Solaris, Other Unix and DOS
Plays all video and container formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, WMV, RealVideo, Theora, Flash, AVI, ASF, QuickTime, Ogg, OGM, Matroska, MP4)
Plays optical discs (CD, VCD, SVCD and DVD)
Has subtitle capability (.sub/.idx, .ssa/.ass, .srt, .smi, .rt, microvid .sub, subviewer .sub and .txt)
It's General Public License; so it's free.

Only problem from what I can see is that it requires a bit more work to get everything up and running. You'll need the source, the binary codecs and skin. So you'll need to read the readme file and the documentation.

I don't have a Mac and most likely wont ever get one, so please don't ask me for assistance in getting this to work. Hopefully someone with a Mac can get this to work and can become the resident expert on it.

How to Play Files With Missing Video/Audio Codecs

If you try to view most of the movies using Windows Media Player straight from the installation you'll notice that some video files will not play.

Blank screen with a message saying missing codec
Sound without picture
Picture without sound
Video artifacts
etc.

The answer to this problem is that you're missing the proper video/audio codec (compression/decompression).

Two methods that I use to view video files and understand it's use are:

VLC Player
Windows Media Player with codec pack

VLC Player

It's a very robust and versatile cross platform (windows, mac, linux...) media player which has the capability to show subtitles. One problem is that all the codecs are self-contained if a new codec is used on the video file, you wont be able to view it until VLC Player is updated. A second problem is that VLC Player will not play rmvb files

One good feature is that you can get Portable VLC Media Player. Which is an installation free version of VLC Player, which can be run off a USB key and used on a computer that you do not have installation access.

Windows Media Player with K-Lite

The K-Lite Codec Pack has some nice features:

It it always up-to-date with the latest versions of the codecs.
It is very user-friendly and the installation is fully customizable, meaning that you can install only those components that you really want.
It has been very well tested, so that the package doesn't contain any conflicting codecs.
It comes in one installation package which will uninstall previous versions when you upgrade.
It includes vobsub to view subtitles.

There are three versions of the K-Lite Codec Pack: Basic, Standard and Full.

K-Lite Codec Pack Basic contains only the most essential things. It contains everything you need to be able to play the most popular and widespread formats. It is small enough to fit on a single floppy. Also great for including on your movie CDs.
K-Lite Codec Pack Standard contains everything you need to play all the commonly used formats. This package should be enough for the average user.
K-Lite Codec Pack Full contains even more codecs. It also has encoding support for the various formats. This package is for power users and people who do their own encodings.

Both standard and full version comes with Media Player Classic. Which you can choose not to install if you want (just check or uncheck the box during installation). I prefer to use Windows Media Player 11.

The other advantage of using codec packs is the ability add the capability to play Real Media and Quicktime files.

Note. The "Lite" versions are installers without Media Player Classic.

How to View Subtitles (Vobsub)

VobSub

VobSub is a filter for Windows Media Player to give it the capability of playing subtitles. It can handle two kinds of subtitle formats:

vobsub ripped: idx/sub, and
textual: srt, sub, psb, smi, ssa, ass

I'll start with a simplified and streamlined installation. This is just if you want to watch subtitled video files.

Download the program and run it to begin installation.
Once you get the installation options window. Expand the Plugins options and check only the Vobsub for DirectShow option.
Complete the installation and "viola" it's done. Windows Media will now be able to show subtitles with your video file.

VobSub tied together with Windows Media has the capability to automatically find and load subtitle files so long as the following conditions are met.

The video file and subtitle file must be in the same location, and
The video file and subtitle file must have the same name (excluding the file extension of course).

This is an example of how the files must be named. The blue box is the naming convection for a video with idx/sub files. The purple box is the naming convection for srt files.

Therefore starting the video file alone will automatically load up the corresponding subtitle file.

You'll know Vobsub has started and the subtitle is loaded when the DirectVobSub icon pops up in the bottom right of your screen.

So long as you do not adjust any of the default settings, you should not run into problems. If for some reason you accidentally change the subtitle load setting.

Open VobSub from the start menu.
Click the tab to General
Ensure that Loading is set for "Load when needed"
Apply the setting and close.

If your subtitles are not synchronized with the video. You can manually adjust the delay (earlier or later) as required.

While the video is playing and VobSub is loaded, right click on the VobSub icon.
Left click on DirectVobSub (auto-loading version) to open the program settings.

Go to the Timing tab.
Adjust the delay as required.

Note. You can temporarily adjust the timing for a subtitle that was synced for a different video frame-rate, by utilizing the experimental Force FPS feature. A permanent fix for that problem is to use SubResync (a utility of VobSub).
Of course you'll need to identify the video frame-rate. GSpot is a good free utility for this.

Advanced VobSub features (Properties menu)

You can change the font style, size, colour scheme, shadow and outline in the "Main" tab; text settings.

How to Join Files (HJSplit)

HJSplit is a self contained program. That means there is no installation required. Just Download the latest version for your OS (Windows / Mac / Linux). Save to anywhere you desire and remember where it is saved.

To join a split file.

First start the hjsplit 2.3.exe program.
Click join and in the new window, click input file.

Open up the folder where the split video files were downloaded to. The program will only show the .001 file.
Select the file and it will now show in the file name box.
Now select open.

HJSplit will now start joining the file and you'll see a status bar.

When the joining is complete a new window will indicate completion.

Close and exit HJSplit and watch the video.

If you so desire, you can link the .001 file to automatically start up HJSplit when you left click the split file.

Right click the .001 file and select "open with"
In the drop-down menu click "choose program"
Check the "always use select program" box
Browse for the HJSplit program and select "open"

Note: Ensure that you have ALL parts of the video in the same folder and that the names (minus the split file extension; .001 .002 .003 .004 .005......) are identical. As well, ensure that the downloaded file is complete.

Here's a compilation of Megaupload hacks and tricks which we have personally tested and found to work, including our own review of the advantages & disadvantages for each method:

1. By-passing Megaupload’s Country Limit

Advantages:

Ability to bypass the Megaupload country download slots limit without installing the Megaupload toolbar.

Disadvantages:

Only works on Mozilla Firefox (not for Internet Explorer).
May clash with gmail applications.
Does not support parallel downloads i.e. you may only download ONE file at a time.

Q: What are the differences between hard-subbing and soft-subbing?

A: If you can watch the video with its subtitle, it means the video has been hard-subbed. However, if the subtitle (.srt) is provided separately, it means that the episode is soft-subbed.

Q: Hey, how do I play the files? I tried abc player, xyz player.. Cant play. Please assist.

A: Please try "cHinKy's Codec Choice" and use either the "Media Player Classic" or "Zoom Player" in the pack to play the videos.

Q: How do I watch an episode which is soft-subbed?

A: The "Media Player Classic" and "Zoom Player" in the "cHinKy's Codec Choice" will be able to auto-detect the .srt file.

Q: When I was extracting the files from episodes 5, 6, 7, and 8, and it says the files are corrupted? am i doing something wrong?

A: Have you tried re-downloading? If the links are faulty, others will be complaining too.

Q: What are .001 , .002... files?

A: To watch these videos, you need to download ALL the parts (e.g. .001 , .002...) first and COMBINE them with HJSPLIT before watching. Please ensure that you place all the parts in the same folder too!

Q: Can I burn these files in a disc so that I can watch it on tv?

A: Yes, there's a function in Nero that says "Make Video CD". Just follow the steps. Alternatively, if you own a divx-enabled video player, you can just burn the video into the disc as "Data".

Q: Do you have help for Macintosh users?

Q: What are mirror links?

A: Mirror links are "additional" links for the SAME source file, just in case the other one is not working.

Q: Can you upload this movie/drama/soundtrack for me?

Q: Can you upload this movie/drama/soundtrack from Megaupload to Megashares/ Sendspace/etc (and vice versa) for me?
